Teaching

I have always been keen on education and training and have been responsible for a number of educational initiatives, particularly since my appointment as Chair at the University of Newcastle. I formed (with Prof Garth Johnson) the University Centre for Rehabilitation and Engineering Studies (CREST)), which is a cross-faculty research and educational body responsible for the development of a MSc course as well as a number of short courses, study days and conferences. CREST is also a significant research organisation having raised over £3.5m in research funding since its foundation.

I was responsible for the creation of the MSc Course in Rehabilitation Management, which ran from 1995 to 1998 at the University and 45 students qualified from a wide variety of professional backgrounds and from a number of different locations around the world. I have also been responsible for the creation of the University Certificate Course in Disability Studies as well as a University Certificate Course in Neurological Rehabilitation.

I have recently developed a number of teaching courses for rehabilitation physicians and other clinicians in Eastern Europe. I have run a regular teaching course in Bosnia (funded by the European Union Tempus Fund), Latvia (in association with the Canadian Department of Development) and Moldova (funded by the Department for International Development). Recently, as President of the World Federation of NeuroRehabilitation, I have initiated a number of teaching initiatives across the world for training of neurorehabilitation professionals and have recently completed teaching courses in Mongolia and Siberia.
