MEDICO-LEGAL EXPERT

Active in medico-legal practice for over 20 years, Prof. Barnes produced over 3000 reports in over 2000 individuals before developing NRC Medical Experts, a specialist expert witness chambers of neurorehabilitation experts. 

A LEADING SPECIALIST MEDICAL EXPERT WITNESS

Throughout his neurorehabilitation career, Prof. Barnes was a leading medical expert witness specialising in neurorehabilitation. The majority of his medico-legal work focused on adults (19-86 years); however, he also produced over 200 reports on children (18 years or younger).

 

The range of diagnoses included traumatic brain and spine injury (80%), cerebral palsy (10%) and other complex neurological conditions such as complex whiplash injury and anoxic brain damage (10%). Before retiring from medico-legal work, Prof. Barnes also developed particular expertise in assessing life expectancy and produced around 700 reports focussing on life expectancy in adults and children.

 

Working with more than 300 different firms of solicitors, Prof. Barnes's work was primarily claimant orientated (about 85%) with around 10% for defendants and 5% on a jointly instructed basis. The reports primarily included the English, Scottish and Welsh jurisdiction, but he also included reports for foreign courts (Hong Kong and Ireland). During his medico-legal career, Prof. Barnes was cross-examined in court on 72 occasions.

National Neurological Rehabilitation Chambers - NRC Medical Experts 

In conjunction with Dr Edmund Bonikowski, Prof. Barnes launched the NRC Medical Experts, a neurological rehabilitation chamber of expert witnesses and Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine, in 2015.

 

NRC Medical Experts brings together expert neurological rehabilitation clinicians experienced in medico-legal work who work to strict quality standards.  NRC Medical Experts provide expert witnesses in neurorehabilitation medicine and neuropsychiatry, neuropsychology, neurology, neuro-physiotherapy, neuro-occupational therapy and speech therapy, and behavioural nursing.
